Burning Regulations |

To obtain a burn permit contact the Fire Department at 417-673-2254. Burning is allowed on a day by day basis depending on the current weather conditions. If burning is allowed, the Fire Department will come to your location, inspect the burn site, and issue the burn permit.
Prohibited Open Burning Under State Regulation: Any waste generated by a business, trade, industry, or demolition operation cannot be burned. This would include, but not limited to lumber, paper, cardboard boxes, pallets, tires, rubber products, hazardous materials, Styrofoam, plastics, petroleum based products and treated wood. Any asbestos-containing material cannot be burned. This includes residential burning. Open Burning in Land Clearing Operations: Open burning of tree trunks, tree limbs and vegetation from land clearing operations is allowed only in the outstate area if the burning takes place outside the city limits of any incorporated area or municipality and at least 200 yards from the nearest inhabited dwelling. Material such as tires or waste oil may not be used to start fires or be burned in fires. Prohibition Open Burning: Open burning that will be offensive or objectionable due to smoke or emissions when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous shall be prohibited. The code official is authorized to order extinguishment by the permit holder or the fire department of open burning which creates or adds to a hazardous or objectionable situation. Location: The location for open burning shall not be less than 50 feet from any structure, and provisions shall be made to prevent the fire from spreading to within 50 feet of any structure. Exceptions: 1. Fires in approved containers that are not less than 15 feet from a structure. 2. The minimum required distance from a structure shall be 25 feet where the pile size is 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height. Bonfires: A bonfire shall not be conducted within 25 feet of a structure or combustible materials unless the fire is contained in a barbecue pit. Conditions which could cause a fire to spread within 25 feet of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition. Recreational Fires: Recreational fires shall not be conducted within 25 feet of a structure or combustible material unless the fire is contained in a barbeque pit. Conditions which could cause a fire to spread within 25 feet of a structure shall be eliminated prior to ignition. Attendance: Open burning, bonfires or recreational fires shall be constantly attended until the fire is extinguished. A minimum of one portable fire extinguisher or other approved on site fire-extinguishing equipment, such as dirt, sand, water barrel, garden hose or water truck, shall be available for immediate utilization. |
